Water Softeners in West Michigan

Is Hard Water Damaging Your Home?

You can see it on your dishes, feel it on your skin, and hear about it from your plumber. West Michigan hard water leaves mineral deposits on everything it touches. Left alone, it wears down appliances, drives up energy use, and turns everyday cleaning into a chore. Gordon Water Systems has helped local homeowners fix hard water for more than 50 years. We test your water for free, explain what's going on in plain language, and recommend a system that fits your home and your budget.

The signs

How Do You Know If You Have Hard Water?

Hard water is easy to overlook. If a few of these sound familiar, it's probably the cause.

Hard water damage builds slowly, most people don't notice the cost until an appliance fails early or the energy bill creeps up. West Michigan is hard-water country: as groundwater moves through the region's limestone, it picks up the calcium and magnesium that make water hard.

Seeing orange or reddish stains instead of white buildup? That points to iron, not hardness, and a softener alone may not clear it. Our iron and whole-home filters handle staining, metallic taste, and rotten-egg odor, and we'll flag any iron during your free test.

The fix

What Does a Water Softener Do?

A water softener removes the calcium and magnesium that make water hard before it reaches your taps. It works through a process called ion exchange: as water passes through the resin tank, those hard minerals trade places with sodium, so what comes out is soft and far easier on your home.

  • Cleaner dishes
  • Softer skin & hair
  • Appliances that last longer
  • Less soap & detergent
  • Lower energy bills
  • No more scrubbing scale
"Water Conditioners": Some companies sell them as a premium upgrade over a softener, but in most cases it's the same type of system with a different name and a higher price. We'll walk you through the differences so the choice is clear. (More on that in the FAQ below.)

Water Softener Systems We Install & Service

We carry several product lines, so we can match you to the system your water calls for, rather than fitting you to whatever sits in stock.

Non-electric Most popular Signature Series

Kinetico

Signature Series

Best forMost West Michigan homes with standard hard water.

A compact, reliable twin-tank system with the same non-electric efficiency as the Premier Series. A strong fit for households that want proven performance without paying for more system than they need.

Smart · Electric ProMate Series

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have hard water?
If you see white buildup on your faucets, spots on your dishes, or soap that won't lather, there's a good chance your water is hard. The only way to know for sure is to test it, and we do that for free.
Doesn't my city supply me with soft water?
Not usually. Municipal systems treat water to make it safe to drink, but they don't soften it. Most West Michigan water still arrives hard, whether it comes from a city main or a private well.
Do water softeners put salt in my water?
No. A softener uses salt to recharge its resin, but it doesn't add salt to your drinking water. The process swaps hardness minerals for a small amount of sodium, far less than what many everyday foods contain.
What's the difference between a water softener and a water conditioner?
"Water conditioner" is a name some companies use to market what is, in most cases, the same type of system at a higher price. We'll explain the differences, if any, between the systems we carry.
Why does soft water feel "slippery" when I wash my hands?
That smooth, slippery feel is soft water doing its job. Without hardness minerals fighting the soap, it rinses away cleanly instead of leaving a film behind on your skin.
What's causing the orange and red stains in my sinks and tubs?
Those stains come from iron, not hardness, and a softener alone may not fully clear them. We often pair a softener with an iron or whole-home filter. Your free water test will show how much iron you're dealing with.
Is soft water bad for my septic system?
No. Softened water isn't harmful to a properly working septic system, and the small amount of sodium a typical softener adds is minimal.
If I have a water softener, do I need a drinking water system?
They do different jobs. A softener protects your whole home and appliances from hardness, while a reverse osmosis drinking water system polishes the water at your tap. Many homeowners pair the two.
How often do I need to add salt?
For most homes, every four to eight weeks. Our high-efficiency Kinetico systems use less salt than conventional softeners. We also offer salt delivery right to your door.
How much does a water softener cost?
It depends on your home size, water conditions, and which system fits best. We offer a range of options and flexible financing. The best way to get a straight number is to start with a free water test.
