Drinking Water Systems in West Michigan

Do You Know What's in Your Drinking Water?

There’s a lot to appreciate about your water, and the right filtration can make it even more enjoyable. Most West Michigan homes have water that meets every state and federal standard, and still, a lot of people notice it doesn’t taste quite the way they’d like. City water uses chlorine to keep it clean on the way to your home, older homes can sometimes pick up lead from their plumbing, and private wells often have their own mix of iron, nitrates, or arsenic. A drinking water system adds filtration right at the tap for better tasting water in every glass, your morning coffee, and the meals you prepare. At Gordon Water, we offer a free water test and friendly, straightforward guidance to help you explore what could make your water a better fit for your home.

The Signs

Safe Water and Good Water Aren't the Same Thing

If any of these sound familiar, filtration at the tap is worth looking at.

None of these mean your water is unsafe. Michigan's standards are strict and most local utilities meet them comfortably. What it does mean is that the water reaching your glass could be better, and a system at the sink is usually the cheapest way to get there.

The Fix

What Does a Drinking Water System Do?

A reverse osmosis system is one way to enjoy cleaner, safer drinking water. If your main concern is chlorine taste, a carbon filter may be a good fit. Whatever your water concerns, we believe the right treatment can make a meaningful difference. Testing your water first helps us recommend a solution that fits your needs. If you’d prefer bottled water, we offer that too. At Gordon Water, our passion is helping people access cleaner, safer water in the way that works best for their household.

A note on filter pitchers. A pitcher filter reduces chlorine taste and not much else. It's a fine thing to own, but it is not doing what an RO system does. If lead, PFAS, nitrates, or arsenic are your concern, a pitcher isn't the answer.

How Reverse Osmosis Works

  • Tap water in — Chlorine, sediment, dissolved solids
  • Prefilter — Sediment and chlorine taste reduced
  • RO membrane — Dissolved minerals, metals, and organics rejected to drain
  • Storage tank & postfilter — Final carbon polish
  • Dedicated tap — Water you'll want to drink

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a drinking water system if I'm on city water?
That's up to you. West Michigan utilities deliver water that meets every state and federal standard, but it still arrives carrying the chlorine used to keep it safe in the pipes, and that's what most people are tasting. Homes with older plumbing can also pick up trace lead after the water leaves the main. A free test tells you what your tap is delivering.
What's the difference between a filter and a reverse osmosis system?
A carbon filter reduces chlorine taste and odor and some organic compounds. A reverse osmosis system does that and adds a membrane that rejects dissolved minerals, metals like lead and arsenic, nitrates, and a long list of organics. RO costs more and wastes some water to drain. If chlorine taste is your only complaint, a filter is enough.
Will a drinking water system reduce PFAS?
Reverse osmosis is one of the treatment methods rated for PFAS reduction, and Kinetico states the K5 is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 58 for PFOA and PFOS. If PFAS is the concern, ask us about the third-party PFAS test, which is a separate paid test rather than part of the free water test.
Does an RO system take out the good minerals too?
It reduces dissolved minerals across the board, calcium and magnesium included. For most people that's not a nutritional issue, since diet supplies far more of both than drinking water does. If you dislike how demineralized water tastes, a remineralizing cartridge adds calcium and magnesium back. Say so when we test and we'll spec it in.
How much water does a reverse osmosis system waste?
Some, and the amount depends on the system and your water pressure. It's the trade-off that comes with the membrane. Kinetico publishes efficiency ratings for its systems, and we'll go through the numbers for whichever one fits your home.
Do I still need a softener if I have a drinking water system?
They do different jobs. A drinking water system treats one tap. A softener treats every tap, which is what protects your water heater, dishwasher, and plumbing from West Michigan hard water. Plenty of homes here have both, and an RO system generally runs better on softened water.
How often do the filters need changing?
Prefilters and postfilters are typically annual. Membranes last several years. The exact interval depends on your water and how much you use. On the K5, a mechanical shut-off stops flow once the postfilter has processed its rated volume, so you can't accidentally run past it.
Can I install a drinking water system myself?
Some people do. What you give up is the sizing and the diagnosis: knowing which cartridges your water calls for, whether the membrane will foul on your iron levels, and whether the system is even the right answer. Our installs also carry the manufacturer warranty and our own service.
Does a drinking water system work on well water?
Yes, with the right prefiltering. Wells often carry iron, sediment, or hardness that will foul a membrane quickly if it goes in untreated, so the RO system usually sits downstream of an iron filter or softener. That's exactly the kind of thing the on-site test is for.
How much does a drinking water system cost?
It depends on which system fits and what your water needs. We test your water for free, then lay out options at different price points so you can pick what works for your home and budget.
