The Fix

What Makes a Kinetico System Different?

Both Kinetico systems run non-electrically. There's no timer, no computer, and nothing to plug in. Water pressure powers the system. There's no timer or computer to fail, and nothing to reset after a power outage.

Both use quick-disconnect cartridges, so filter changes are a twist rather than a plumbing job. Both feed a 3-gallon storage tank under the sink and a dedicated tap. They differ on certification, daily output, and whether you can add to them later.

Warranties: Both systems carry a longer membrane warranty when they're installed downstream of a Kinetico softener, because softened water is easier on an RO membrane. On the K5 that's the difference between a 10-year and a 4-year membrane warranty. Ask about it before you decide the order of operations in your basement.

How Both Systems Work

  • Tap water in — Driven by household water pressure, no electricity
  • Prefilter — Sediment and chlorine taste reduced
  • RO membrane — Dissolved minerals, metals, and organics rejected to drain
  • 3-gallon storage tank — Treated water held ready
  • Carbon postfilter & dedicated tap — Final polish on the way out

K5 Drinking Water Station

Kinetico

K5 Drinking Water Station

Certified to: NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 58 by WQA, plus 372 for lead-free materials. The Standard 53 health-effects certification covers arsenic V, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, fluoride, lead, radium, selenium, and turbidity. Standard 58 adds cysts, dissolved solids, nitrate and nitrite, and a long list of organic compounds.

Daily output: about 20 gallons on the standard tank, about 40 on the QuickFlo tank.

Upgrade slots: two, for VOC Guard, Chloramine Guard, Arsenic Guard, Perchlorate Guard, Purefecta Guard, or a remineralizing cartridge.

Warranty: 10 years on parts, and 10 years on the membrane when it follows a Kinetico softener.

The Short Version

The K5 makes two to four times more water a day, carries a health-effects certification the A200 doesn't, can be configured for a contaminant you've tested for, and carries five times the membrane warranty. The A200 costs less and does the core job well on city water. If you don't have a known contaminant problem, that may be all you need.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the real difference between the K5 and the AquaKinetic?
Certification scope, output, and upgradability. The K5 is certified by WQA against NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 58; the A200 against 42 and 58 only. The K5 makes roughly 20 to 40 gallons a day depending on the tank, the A200 about 11. The K5 has two slots for add-on cartridges; the A200 has none. If you have a specific contaminant to address, that last one usually settles it.
Do Kinetico reverse osmosis systems need electricity?
No. Both run on your household water pressure. There's no timer, no circuit board, and nothing to plug in, which also means nothing to reset after a power outage.
Which one is certified for PFAS?
Kinetico states the K5 is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 58 for PFOA and PFOS reduction. The AquaKinetic A200 carries no PFAS claim of any kind. If PFAS is the reason you're shopping, the K5 is the system to look at.
What does the K5's mechanical shut-off do?
The postfilter is rated for 500 gallons. Once it's processed that much, the cartridge mechanically restricts flow, so the system tells you it needs service by stopping rather than by working less well without saying so. There's also a filter-life indicator on the front. The A200 has neither, so its changes are calendar-based.
Can I add a filter to the AquaKinetic later?
No. It's three fixed stages with no auxiliary positions. That's the main reason we steer households with a known contaminant toward the K5 instead, since the upgrade path is the thing you can't add after the fact.
What are the Guard cartridges, and are they certified?
They're add-on cartridges for the K5's two auxiliary slots: VOC Guard, Chloramine Guard, Arsenic Guard, Perchlorate Guard, and Purefecta Guard. Kinetico states that Arsenic Guard, Perchlorate Guard, Chloramine Guard, and Mineral Plus are not NSF or WQA certified. VOC Guard is part of the certified K5 configuration. Worth knowing before you assume every cartridge carries the same backing.
Why does the membrane warranty change if I have a softener?
Hard water is rough on an RO membrane. Running the system downstream of a softener extends its life enough that Kinetico warrants it longer: 10 years instead of 4 on the K5. In West Michigan, where hardness runs from about 8 grains on Lake Michigan water to over 20 on groundwater, that's not a small consideration.
How often do the cartridges need changing?
Prefilters and postfilters are generally annual. Kinetico says the RO membrane isn't a routine replacement item and typically runs several years. Your water and your usage move both numbers, which is part of what the on-site test establishes.
Does Gordon service Kinetico systems it didn't install?
Yes. We're an authorized Kinetico dealer and our technicians are factory trained, and we service most makes and models regardless of who put them in.
How much does a Kinetico reverse osmosis system cost?
It depends on the system, the cartridges your water calls for, and the install. We test your water for free and lay out options at different price points. Ask about current offers when you schedule, since we run them periodically.
